Where are the camps held?
Sylvia Hatchell Carolina Basketball Camps will be held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Campers will stay at Granville Towers, student housing for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (air-conditioning, carpeted rooms, swimming pool, and private bath), where they will enjoy excellent all-you-can-eat meals. Granville Towers is located on the most popular area of campus, Franklin Street. Some campers as well as some teams may be housed on campus.
Teams attending the Carolina Super Showcase Mini Team Camp are responsible for their own housing and meals.
What ages may attend camp?
Girls ages 8 through rising high school seniors may attend camp.
(Please note that if your camper will be a freshman in the coming school year and is a starting Varsity player, she may be eligible to attend College Prep camp. Please contact Coach Hatchell's office for permission to register your freshman player for that particular camp.)
Who are the coaches at the camp?
Sylvia Hatchell's Carolina Basketball Camp provides and oustanding and experienced staff. In addition to the coaches of the Tar Heels, the camp staff will consist of member of the University of North Carolina women's basketball team, former collegiate players, pro players, and current college, high school, and junior/middle school coaches. The camper to coach ratio will be approximately 6 to 1. Each camper will receive individual attention as well as small group instruction in order to improve her basketball skills. Without a doubt, the best camp staff in America.
What should my child bring?
Each camper is required to bring the following: linens, pillow, swimsuit, towels, personal items, playing clothes, basketball shoes, socks, and alarm clock. Don't forget $30.00 cash for the key deposit as well. (NOTE: We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.)
Will my child be supervised in the dorm?
Yes. At least 6 to 8 female counselors/coaches will be assigned to each floor to supervise the campers. In addition to coaches, counselors, and the camp administrator residing in the dorm with campers, 24-hours security will be provided by Granville Towers. The camp also provides an oustanding, experienced staff of certified trainers who are on hand to help with preventative measures and immediate care for injuries. Our trainers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will be staying in the dorms as well.
How many campers will there be in each dorm room?
What about roommate requests?
Will my child be matched with his/her roommate preference?
All campers will be housed with roommates. Roommates will be pre-assigned according to registration form requests. Double and triple occupancy may be available. When making your request, please check with your roommate to see if you are her preference. Roommate preferences should match on each application submitted. If no roommate preference is selected, every effort will be made to place the camper with a roommate of the same age or grade.
How much spending money should I send with my camper?
Is there a Camp Store?
We recommend that your camper have between $25-$50. The camp store is located at Granville Towers. UNC Women's Basketball clothing and other sports apparel will be available for purchase. Drinks, pizza, and other snacks may also be purchased.
How will the campers get from the dorm to the training and practice areas?
Woollen Gym, Fetzer Gym, Ram's Head Recreational Complex, the Dean E. Smith Center, and the newly renovated, legendary Carmichael Basketball Center will be used for instruction and competition. Campers will be transported to and from the gyms by buses for Elite College Prep, Shooting, Position, and Individual camps only. Teams must provide their own transportation.
What is the ground transportation that is mentioned in the brochure?
Transportation is available to meet incoming campers at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the Chapel Hill Bus Station, and the Durham Train Station. Transportation is for campers attending the Elite College Prep, Shooting, Position, and Individual Camps ONLY!! Campers must arrive on the day of check in and leave on the day of check out.
Can I pay a deposit to hold my camper's spot?
Yes. Deposits are non-refundable. A $50 deposit will hold the camper's spot for Elite College Prep, Shooting, and Position Camps. A$100 deposit will hold the camper's spot for Individual Camps. Balance for online registrations will automatically be charged to your credit card around the last week of May. Balances for mailed in registrations are due into the camp office before June 1st. We do not accept personal checks after June 1st. Balance for mailed in registrations can also be paid on registration day by cash, money order, cashier's check, or credit card (Master Card, Visa, and Discover).
What is included with tuition for camp?
Your camper's registration/tuition payment covers the entire cost of instruction, insurance, camp shirt, meals, lodging, and basketball for individual and specialty camps.
Do I really need a completed waiver form to participate in camp?
Yes. No camper will be allowed to participate without a completed waiver form. Essential information in the Application portion includes camper's name, address, parents' names, telephone contact numbers, camper's age, grade, height, and preferred position. Required information in the Waiver portion includes camper's name, camp(s) attending, all Medical Insurance Information (Insurance Company, Policy Holder, Policy Number, and complete address OR complete phone number of the insurance company), at least one parent signature, and the doctor may sign the waiver form giving permission for the camper to participate OR the doctor can write a note OR you can make a copy of this year's school physical which contains the doctor's signature and attach the physical to the waiver form. The waiver form and doctor's permission should be into camp office before June 1st.
Is there a key deposit required?
Yes. A $30.00 cash key deposit is required. Please bring the correct change for the deposit. The deposit will be returned to the camper when the key is returned.
How are refunds handled?
ALL DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. The only exception is a written doctor's excuse, less a $50 administrative fee. Do not request a refund unless this is the situation! All requests for refund must be made in writing by July 13th. Team deposits and player deposits are non-refundable.
